Through my mind's eye I see the magical landscape of the countryside which completely captivated me as a child. It is this landscape which constantly recurs in my larger pieces but so far has remained largely uninhabited. Now I feel it is time to seek out the characters who might live here. I want the figures in my pictures to appear strong and "monolithic". I have warped and distorted their proportions. This is a device I like to use to give my pictures a dreamlike quality.
The figures have moved far from their original inspiration ....and pleasingly they have now taken on a life of their own ! I like Maria, she looks peaceful, comfortable and patient. Again there is a stillness and tranquility about "The Earth turns and we are friends....." this wasn't intentional, it just appeared before me as the picture evolved. The dancers spinning the Earth are much more manic, they are a celebration of the euphoria and joy of dancing with others - I can almost hear them screaming with excitement !
THe figures in these pieces have needed a lot of thought and I've got lots of ideas and a lot more thinking to do before I've finished with these strange people.......!
These pieces were created especially for an exhibition titled "Through the mind's eye". "Maria of the doves and daisies" and "The stargazers" sold on the first night of the exhibition.
